Description
A portrait of a young, black male, from the waste up, smoking a cigarette. I use this portrait to visually describe 'entropy', a scientific concept, as well as a measurable physical property that is most commonly associated with a state of disorder, randomness, or uncertainty.
In recent years, the long-standing use of the term "disorder", to discuss entropy has met with some criticism. Critics of the terminology state that entropy is not a measure of 'disorder' or 'chaos', but rather, a measure of energy's diffusion or dispersal to more microstates. Mathematician, Claude E. Shannon, and "the father of of information theory", use of the term 'entropy' in information theory refers to the most compressed, or least dispersed, amount of code needed to encompass the content of a signal, )which is moving (changing) in the direction of the 'arrow of time'), that our brain is able to interpret this 'compressed' signal as 'reality'.
