Description
American artist, Houston Eugene Conwill (April 2, 1947 - November 14, 2016), was a conceptual-abstract-minimalist, known best for his large-scale sculptural installations. His work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and other major institutions. Conwill earned a BFA from Howard University in 1973, followed by an MFA from USC in 1976. In 1982, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for fine arts. In 1984, he won the American Academy in Rome's prestigious Rome Prize. He died, recently, on November 14, 2016, of prostate cancer. Among his best works are his memorial to the poet Langston Hughes at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem; and his 'waterfall' cascading over the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Yerba Buena Performing Arts Center in San Francisco.
